Press release from ABC TV
After a hugely successful first series Dance Academy has been given the green light for a second series – another 26 half-hour episodes for ABC1 and ABC3.
The second instalment of this top Australian children’s drama will start production in Sydney at the end of January 2011 and will again be produced by Joanna Werner (Werner Film Productions). The first series was received enthusiastically by international broadcasters with sales soon to be announced by ZDF Enterprises.
Dance Academy is seen through the eyes of Tara Webster as she attends the National Academy of Dance. In series two Tara returns for another year with the goal of representing Australia in the world’s most prestigious ballet competition. But perhaps she should be more focused on just surviving her second year, having climbed to the top in her first year, in dance, in life and in love – she now has a very long way to fall.
Two episodes of Dance Academy have been nominated in this year’s AWGIE Awards. The Dance Academy website became the number one visited TV website on the ABC3 portal during the first broadcast run. Plans are underway to continue the extensive online offering to coincide with series two.
Dance Academy producer, Joanna Werner said “I’m really delighted to have a second series of Dance Academy confirmed, to build on the success of the first series. The response from the audience has been really overwhelming and we are hoping they will enjoy the next instalment.”
ABC TV Children’s Head of Commissioning and Development for, Carla De Jong said “We are thrilled to be commissioning a second series of this high quality drama. The massive success of Dance Academy on air and online has proved a strong connection with our audience. Dance Academy is the highest rated drama on ABC3 and has become a channel defining brand for us.”
